Apu-Paku ry – Charity Without Middlemen

Apu-Paku ry is a development co-operation organization working at the Gambian countryside. The Republic of Gambia is located in the western part of Africa and about third of the population is living below the income poverty line US$1.25 per day. We are running a school and a small farm in the village of Pakau Penku which has about 500 inhabitants. Our goal is to help the poor local community to raise their living standards permanently. To achieve this goal we have offered the locals education and created new means to make a livelihood.

The idea of Apu-Paku ry dates back to 2007 and the organization was officially set up two years later. In 2010 a small group of friends decided to get a van and fill it up with goods received as donations. With a van full of donations and volunteers they drove through Europe all the way to the Gambia. Once they reached their destination they handed out the contents of the car for the local community to use. The van itself was also given to away. During that trip the building of a pre-school, a farm and dwellings began. This is also why the organization was named Apu-Paku ry (a help van).

Here you can find the latest news and updates (only in Finnish unfortunately)

The purpose of this fundraising campaign is to improve the school facilities and the well on the Apu-Paku farm. Most of the money will be used to give the students drinkable water and a daily school meal. Also, we want to buy school uniforms for the students. If there is enough funding, we will also install an effective solar panel system in the school.

The funds raised through the Mesenaatti campaign will be used on:

1. Daily school meals for about 100 children and 20 adults for the whole school year.

2. To finish the work on the sanitary facilities and to build a kitchen for the school.

3. School uniforms for 100 children and 10 teachers

4. To improve the well on the Apu-Paku farm

+ A solar panel system if the raised amount of money exceeds the goal!

School meals

Our goal is to offer our students, teachers and other school workers one free school meal a day. There are about 120 persons in total and most of them are Gambian children aged between 4 and 8 years. There are three class rooms in our school building and one is used by pre-school and the two others by primary school. Our pre-school has 40 students and there are 59 students studying in the primary school. The primary school extends to the grades 1 and 2, but we are building more class rooms for the next school year so we would be able to set up higher grades as well. To raise funds for this project we are throwing ‘Afrikka16’ fundraising party in the spring 2016. There are four Gambian teachers working at the primary school and the pre-school is run by Finnish and Gambian volunteers. There are three to nine pre-school teachers depending on the time of the year. At the moment, there are two student teachers from the University of Oulu working at the school. More student teachers and early childhood education students are coming to work at the school during this school year. School meals are important for the students as well as for the teachers to have the energy to study and teach the whole school day.

The well, the kitchen and the sanitary facilities of the school

Our school and farm are located next the each other and together they form “Apupakuland”. Apupakuland has its own well which was dug by volunteer workers some years ago. At the moment, the water is lifted from the well with the help of rope and buckets. The farm’s banana, orange and cashew trees and cassava shrubs eat up about 500 litres of water a day during the dry season. Lifting that amount of water from the well takes 1-2 hours every day. This is why we are planning to install a pump and some plumbing into the well. The well also needs a concrete lid and the well pit should be lined with concrete so that the water will remain drinkable also in the future. Concrete mass and other building supplies are also needed to build a kitchen for the school. Gambian government agreed to hire cooks for the school, but could not provide the funds for the school meals and for the building of the kitchen. School’s sanitary facilities are half-done and they were built with the help of money raised at the ‘Afrikka15’ party. Now, the goal is to finish the work.

School uniforms

For some of us Westerners school uniforms might sound like useless luxury, but in Gambia and many other poor countries school uniforms have an important function. Firstly, schools are not considered official or respectful if the students are not wearing school uniforms. In discussions with the locals the importance of the uniforms was emphasized. Secondly, the countryside of Gambia is very poor and all decent clothes are more than welcome. The school uniforms will be manufactured by a local tailor from Pakau Penku – who is incidentally using a sewing machine brought by Apu-Paku some years ago – so we are supporting local business at the same time. For these reasons we want to offer school uniforms for all the students and teachers.

2000 euros is needed to realize the aforementioned development projects with the daily school meal being the most expensive and most important investment towards a better a future.

Solar panel system

Pakau Penku village does not have electricity apart from Apu-Paku’s single solar panel. If this campaign exceeds the goals, we will be able to supply the school with a simple and mobile high quality solar panel system. This would able a lot of things in Pakau Penku: we would be able to use information technology as a teaching tool and also to teach the use of information technology. In addition, we could even hold movie nights for the locals. With the help of this system they would also be able to charge their mobile phones and other equipment.

The funds raised with this crowdfunding campaign will be forwarded straight to the Apu-Paku Pakau Penku Lower Basic School. Gambian children will be grateful for your support. Children are the future!

Miehiä Virralla is a calendar that has yet to be seen.

It’s an entirety that has been shot at Siuntiojoki during four seasons. The purpose is to bring forth the nowaday-hecticness and technological development that has suppressed the state of mind of the Finnish man.

One picture tells a lot, and a story that pours scorch smoke and wintertime log fire doesn’t need explaining. It’s a state of mind that’s part of the genome of every Finn. It’s the one thing that unites everyone in this country and its relentless nature.

With this financial campaign we finance the marketing and recording of our nature movie Joen Lumo. You can find more information (in Finnish only) about Joen Lumo -movie from our previous Mesenaatti.me campaign Joen Lumo and the film’s homepage.

NORDIC CHORO – album release and concerts

”I am a dancer by profession and it is still my day job, but I have also been working with video since I was a small boy. I have often combined dance and visual narration as video projections in my dance works, and I have been asked many times why I don’t make a dance film. My answer has always been that I haven’t come up with a concept that called for that particular genre. An idea eventually arrived and finally I had the reason to do it. I very much hope that you will support the realisation of this project and be one of the first people to see where it takes us.”
– Jouka Valkama

What is the film going to be like?

SEE | OBEY consists of three independent narratives which run side-by-side as they portray human emotions, everyday events and conflicts through physical expression and movement. The stories are at once concrete and abstract, so a combination of dance and moving pictures is essential to give them full expression.

The passage of time in the stories is manipulated through cinematic methods, and moments that are gone in the blink of an eye find new depths when they are viewed in slow motion. This atmosphere can only be produced in a dance film and cannot be recreated on the stage.

The director of the film Jouka Valkama and choreographer Susanna Leinonen have combined in Leinonen’s previous works to create an imaginative visual vocabulary which awakens powerful associations. The videos that they have made together have acted as the inspiration for the creation of this independent dance film.

Where can the film be seen?

SEE | OBEY dance film will receive its first premiere on 14 November 2015 in Stoa the Cultural Centre of Eastern Helsinki. It will run until 22 November.

Sat 14.11. at 7pm
Sun 15.11. at 3pm
Tues 17.11. at 7pm
Thurs 19.11. at 7pm
Fri 20.11. at 7pm
Sat 21.11. at 7pm
Sun 22.11. at 3pm

In Stoa the films will be projected onto two screens, with the stories moving from one screen to the other. There will also be another version of SEE | OBEY which has been modified for a single screen, and this will later tour dance film festivals at home and abroad. By funding this film you can also be among the first ones to see it from your own home.

What do we need funding for?

Two parts of the film were shot in June and the final and largest piece will be shot in August. The team will have an admirable amount of partners and volunteers, but still a lot of professionals from different fields are required, everything can’t be done by volunteers . Another big expense is the costumes: the large number of performers and the different decades portrayed by the costumes mean that the costs for filming in August will be high.

The film is produced and mainly funded by Susanna Leinonen Company, but additional funding is still needed to finish the film. This is where we need your help. We will use the funds collected by this campaign for wages, costs of costumes and props, equipment rents and postproduction.

“Susanna Leinonen is a master of creating a powerful and very unique expression through her movement language. Her compactly packaged, sensual and physical movement language also demands a lot from her dancers. A lot of thought is invested in the costumes and lightning design which gives the visual world a highly polished touch, and the original choice of music only adds to the aesthetic pleasure.”
– Finland Award

We are requesting your help to fund our project and spread the word to other potential funders. Your support is deeply appreciated!

NORDIC CHORO – album release and concerts

“The film musical Icebreaker was shot in the town of Kemi and Central Finland in April, May and June 2015 and made with the help of volunteers. The film is now in post-production. We need studio time to record the songs for the musical and finish editing the film.”

In the beginning Eliisa’s mother is only little weird. Guess that’s how mothers are?

But then the ice rafts start moving when the daughter becomes a teenager. Mother starts to remember things that should have left alone, forever forgotten deep into the colds of the freezer. These cracks in the ice derail once peaceful family life. Later on Eliisa decides to share the story of her mother on her video blog vlog for everyone to see and hear: Girl, you’re a the swan. You’re in charge/ you decide on your body.

Kahvila

“My eldest daughter was born when I was 19. My son was born the following year. During the next few years still two girls were born. Motherhood is holy to me. It has carried me even through those times when I have felt lost. The love shining in my children’s eyes is the greatest thing in the world and when you have won their confidence it is worth cherishing.

As a woman I pay attention especially to my daughters. At the same time as I make observations about my children’s characters and their ability to feel empathy I examine their wills. Controlling one’s life and defending one’s own boundaries demands power. A woman needs a lot of power to be able to keep her voice heard. But your own voice is important. Without hearing it a woman cannot live the kind of life that she would like to. Therefore it is important to respect the daughter’s will.”

Ystävykset

“After having discussions with women of various ages, I have heard sad stories of how a daughter’s will has been suppressed by other people’s dominance. At their worst, the offences go so deep that one’s mind is not able to deal with the event but it is hidden it deep in the depths of one’s memories.”

Musta joutsen

Please help us to finish the film and share the story that everyone would hear it:

Girl, you are the swan. You deside on your body.

“I wrote the screenplay for the film musical Icebreaker (Jäänmurtaja) in order to devote it to my daughters whose boundaries had been violated. I wrote it out of love for womanhood and for my daughters. It is a song of praise for womanhood. Many thanks to life, because after all, love willl always win.”

Stories about this hundred-year-old house are numerous: the house witch was build 1912 for the stationmaster has also served as staff room for railroad employees, gathering point for different associations, puppet theatre and a studio for designers. Despite the fact that the house has been under danger of being demolished or moved to another location, it stand on its original place and is an essential part of Lahti travel center that is about to be finished.

The house possesses all qualities needed to hold action: great location, good condition age considered, a yard with big trees, a cellar outside and a tiny sauna building. We in Liekki possess the qualities to arrange the action: comprehensive network for cooperation, specialists in the fields of association work, culture and environment, a good heart and strong will. You have all the qualities to make this house a communal action center: will to promote good deeds and a moment to give the project your support.

City of Lahti is selling the house based on offers. In the competition besides the prize offered (30%) another factor is the quality and concept (70%) of the use purpose of the house buyer. Whit money we cannot and want not compete, but our idea is very competitive. The starting bid is at 15000€ and on top of that some financing is needed for obligatory repair and modification to be able to start a cafeteria for instance.

Thank you for taking interest towards our idea.

NORDIC CHORO – album release and concerts

español

In 2006 Evo Morales wins the presidential elections as the first indigenous president in the history of Bolivia. The most important promises of the new government were the nationalization of the natural resources and the recognition of the indigenous people rights, after 500 years under colonization. The Movement Towards Socialism fulfils major social changes and improvements, which the oppressed people just dreamed about for centuries until now.

Our film is a story about the first steps of a new time with leftist indigenous in the power. How is it now when Bolivia has gone forward on the revolutionary road? Has there been a truly improvement in the indigenous peoples lives?  And how does the future look like?

We are a team of film professionals, working within Inland Film Company: Bolivian producer and director Jussi Oroza, known for his worldwide renown and awarded last documentary production “Voices of El Alto” (competition IDFA 2013); producer Sami Laitinen, known for his last feature film still in the movie theatres “Changes”, script writer Hanna Apajalahti, a journalist and expert in Latin America; production assistant Anna Recasens, with a wide experience in film production coordination, including one of the last documentaries of Peter von Bagh.

kuva 1

The audience of this film will join the way of the new revolutionary time. We will see the concrete changes in the people lives, and the role that Bolivian women take in it. Also we will hear what remains of Che Guevara in the story. We will take a path crossing the moisture jungle and salt flat, the marketplaces of the cities and the coca fields, which are part of the millennium Indigenous culture and indeed coca leave is not cocaine.

The nature of Bolivia becomes one main character: the Andean scenery, the lake Titicaca, Amazonia and the birds of the jungle, the sound of the wind, the colour-scheme of the rain and the landscape. Also, the colours in textiles, fruits, the sun, Bolivian folk- and popular music, voices in the city, songs of women, drums, pipes and horns of the bands.

Almost half of the world’s lithium is found in Bolivia. In the law, Pachamama (Mother Earth) has the same rights as people and Evo Morales is fighting against climate change. How to combine the economical interests, like mining, with those rights?

kuva 2

Why this film needs to be made now?

In the 2014 elections Evo Morales won the presidency for the third time with the 61% of the votes. The celebration of the revolutionary decade will take place in January 2016. Furthermore the director Jussi Oroza has been following with his camera the Bolivian political scene since 1993, establishing close relationships with the old and the new government.

Latin America is going through changing times. The leftist movements are leading the fight against the global neo-liberalism. This film has hope and trusts in democratic power: another kind of world is possible. Europe is in a crisis in many ways, now it could be good for people to see how things are handled in the New World.

kuva 3

Production plan

The shooting of the film will be divided in two times. In the autumn of 2015 our small, but effective team will travel to Bolivia for ten days: camera operator, director and sound designer. They will spend time in villages and cities, to film the daily life of the locals and to find and get to know well the main characters of the film.

The second part will take place in January 2015, counting on a larger film crew and bigger technical equipment. We are going to follow the lives of the chosen characters. We will arrange interviews with ministers, the president of Bolivia and other politicians. Also we will include the voices of older and actual Bolivian politicians.

In this new democratic Bolivia, also there are people against the power, who criticise the practices of the actual government. Those voices need to be heard as well. In addition, we will get access to archive documents and journalistic material. Therefore we will co-work with local Bolivian press. In 2006-2008 our team got to follow the reception of the president too.

kuva 4

Budget

The minimum of funding that we expect is 20.000 Euros, as it follows.

20 000€:

Small-scale crew, TV-report style. This means 2 people team (Jussi Oroza and Sami Laitinen), taking the different roles: director, producer, camera operator, sound designer and editor.

60 000€ (or more):

Production crew three times bigger. 50% more of the total days of shooting. More soundtrack and archive footage.  More shooting of landscape and character’s stories. High artistic quality of the documentary film, in order to submit it to film festivals.

We are aiming for more funding from other sources to achieve our goal. Join us!

20 000€:

Rodaje limitado, estilo TV- reportaje.
