Diverse microbial communities live in ancient, isolated and millions of years of old groundwater in deep Finnish bedrock. A drill hole reaching to the depth of seven kilometers is going to be drilled in Otaniemi, Espoo, enabling us to study just how deep life can reach inside the Earth. This research will answer questions such as how deep can we go and still find signs of life? What kind of single-celled organisms, i.e. microbes will be found?  Are we going to detect completely new lifeforms or superorganisms that are adapted to extremes? Is this life active in depths?

Life on Mars?

High temperature and salinity in addition to anoxic environment and low concentration of nutrients typically define life in the deep crystalline rock. Conditions deep inside bedrock resemble the situation on early Earth when life first emerged. Similar environments may be found from other celestial bodies, such as from Mars. By studying the microbial community structure and functions in deep bedrock of Otaniemi will allow us to determine the limits of life, as well as to understand the possibility of emergence of life in other places in the Universe.

Our research consortium

DeepHotMicrobe project is a part of larger research consortium formed by experts and researchers from St1 Deep Heat, University of Helsinki, Geological Survey of Finland (GTK) and VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland. In the future St1 Deep Heat will provide environment-friendly, emission-free heating to the 10 % of the population of Espoo, second largest city in Finland. They will provide access to the scientific studies in the drill hole. Research scientist Lotta Purkamo and senior scientist Malin Bomberg, who both have several years of experience on microbial ecology and deep terrestrial subsurface research, will be responsible of the microbiological analyses. Both work at VTT that provides a world-class research environment and a platform for new technology innovations. The scientific collaboration is lead by Principal Investigator and geophysicist Ilmo Kukkonen from the University of Helsinki, and hydrogeochemistry of the drill hole will be analyzed with expert team from GTK.

Sitting all the time is bad for your health. It increases the risk of overweight, diabetes and cancer. That is why there are many gadgets on the market to make you sit less. We don’t know which are good and which are not. We at Cochrane Work at the Finnish Institute of Occupational Health try to find out what really helps.

We have a team of five volunteers who locate all evidence for or against the effectiveness of measures to reduce sitting. At the moment, it is still very uncertain what works and what does not (see: http://goo.gl/fe6MiB). We know that there are many recent studies that we should include. This requires a lot of hard work and stamina.

We estimate that incorporating the new studies takes 144 person hours. We have no funding for this but we would like to reward the team that will do all this. Tiedetoimittajat Jari Mäkinen ja Markus Hotakainen perustivat Tiedetuubin kohta kolme vuotta sitten julkiseksi paisuntasäiliöksi: he laittoivat sinne muille tiedotusvälineille tekemistään jutuista ja kirjoista yli jäänyttä, mutta etenkin avaruusfriikkejä kiinnostavaa materiaalia.

Sitä oli varsin paljon, ja tuli lisää koko ajan, joten sivusto kasvoi nopeasti.

Suosiosta innostuneena kaksikko alkoi tehdä myös sinne varta vasten juttuja sillä seurauksella, että mukaan liittyi myös avustajia ja Tiedetuubi kasvoi entistäkin laajemmaksi: nyt sivustolla on jo noin 2000 juttua – kaikki ilmaiseksi ja vapaasti luettavissa sekä lähteen mainiten myös epäkaupallisesti käytettävissä (esim. kouluissa).

Sivusto tavoittaa yli 30 000 ihmistä viikossa ja uutta materiaalia tulee parhaimmillaan useita juttuja päivässä.

Tällaisenaan sivusto on kuitenkin muodostunut liian työlääksi harrastuksena pyöritettäväksi. Aluksi sivusto sai muutamia pieniä apurahoja, mutta nyt toiminnan ollessa jatkuvaa, täytyy sivuston avoinna pitämiseen ja kehittämiseen etsiä muita rahoitusmuotoja.

Koska Tiedetuubia ei haluta muuttaa ”kaupalliseksi” sivustoksi, käännymme suoraan yleisön puoleen!

Mihin raha käytetään?

Rahoituksen avulla Tiedetuubin toiminta halutaan vakiinnuttaa, ottaa mukaan avustajia eri aloilta, käynnistää säännöllinen oma videotuotanto ja parantaa sivuston ulkonäköä sekä käytettävyyttä graafikon ja koodaajan avulla.

Taustalla on myös huoli sivuston tulevaisuudesta: ilman lisärahoitusta Tiedetuubin toiminta nykyisellään ei ole mahdollista serverikustannusten ja muiden koon myötä kasvaneiden menojen vuoksi.

Tavoitesumma pitää sisällään perusparannuksia sivustoon sekä laajennetun toiminnan kustannukset vuoden ajaksi. Mitä suuremmaksi summa tulee, sitä pitemmälle tulevaisuuteen toiminta varmistuu ja kehitystyötä voidaan tehdä perusteellisemmin.

Minimitavoite on puolestaan hyvin pieni, koska jokainen euro tulee tarpeeseen. Tavoitteena on myös kerätä Tiedetuubin ympärille tieteestä ja tekniikasta kiinnostuneiden henkilöiden Tiedetuubi-klubi, jolle järjestetään kiinnostavia ja maittavia tapahtumia, käyntejä tiedemaailman kulissien taakse, tapaamisia tunnettujen henkilöiden kanssa, matkoja jännittäviin paikkoihin sekä tarjotaan mielenkiintoisia (ja hauskoja) tuotteita.

Neljä tapaa auttaa ja tulla mukaan:

1. Tuen Tiedetuubin toimintaa ja liityn Tiedetuubi-klubiin: 40 euroa.

2. Tuen toimintaa ja ostan Tiedetuubin Tiede-T-paidan: 60/70 euroa

3. Tuen toimintaa, liityn Tiedetuubi-klubiin ja ostan paidan, 80/90 euroa.

4. Ryhdyn Tiedetuubin supermesenaatiksi: 150 euron lahjoituksella pääsee mukaan Tiedetuubi-klubiin, saa T-paidan sekä saa kutsuja erikoistilaisuuksiin. Ensimmäinen järjestetään Helsingin Observatoriolla lauantaina 3. lokakuuta 2015 sulkemisajan jälkeen klo 16 Kansainvälisen avaruusviikon päätapahtuman yhteydessä. Huom: mukaan mahtuu vain 50 ensismmäistä.

CROWDFUNDING FOR SCIENCE!

Quantum Arts Jam will merge art and physics in three different sessions. Together with the artists we will turn an equation into a painting and the Universe into a real dance.

“We are physicists, constantly asking questions. From time to time we do find answers in experiments, formulas, even theories. However, we imagine things we cannot always picture.

Mathematics is the language of physics, with which we tell stories that pictures hardly could. As universal as it is, our language is not spoken by everyone. That is why we need interpreters. That is why we asked for help from art. ”

Quantum physicists will work together with the artists in improvised jam sessions, with an intention of creating atmosphere that speaks the dialogical language of quantum physics and art with both of its form and content.

TURJAN RANNAN PERIFERISET POMORIKYLÄT
– kenttätutkimus kulttuurin ja luonnon välisestä vuorovaikutuksesta
Olemme Oulussa toimiva vapaa tutkijaryhmä, jonka intohimona on pohjoisuus. Kiinnostuksemme kohteena on Vienanmeren pohjoisranta ja siellä sijaitsevien kylien kulttuurin ja luonnon nykytilanne. Pomorit – joskus myös rantavenäläisiksi kutsutut – ovat osa kulttuurien kirjoa täällä Kuolan niemimaalla, Turjan rannalla.
Astu outoon ja tuttuun maailmaan! Monissa uskonnoissa pohjoinen ilmansuunta merkitsee pahaa. Suomalaisissa loitsuissa ja balladeissa tuodaan esille, että Turjan koski on palava pyörre, johon puut, kanervat ja heinät uppoavat. Joki on täynnä haavoittavia okaita ja teräaseita. Tauteja manataan Turjan koskeen, jossa entuudestaan asuu murhamiehiä. Pohjoisessa ovat kylmät tuulet, hallat, pakkaset ja talvet, loitsujen mukaan myös sairaudet, kivut, vaivat ja kuolema. Pohjola, Lappi, Turja tai Rutja tarkoittivat yleensä eeppisessä runoudessa myyttistä pohjoista ilmansuuntaa.
Olemme vuoden 1887 Suuren Kuolan retkikunnan jalanjäljillä; tämän ryhmän jäseniä kävi myös Turjan rannan kylissä. Retkikunnan lisäksi 1800-luvun lopussa ja 1900-luvun alussa aluetta ovat tutkineet muun muassa kansanrunouden kerääjät, kielentutkijat, hyönteistieteilijät ja tähtitieteilijät niin Suomesta kuin ulkomailta. Rajan ylittävä tutkimustoiminta hiipui vuosikymmeniksi neuvostovallan aikana.
Tutkimusryhmän puitteissa olemme dokumentoineet Turjan rannikon kylät jo Kuusiniemeen saakka. Olemme kartoittaneet kasvillisuutta, kylänraittien ja kotien kansanestetiikkaa, nykykansantaidetta, pihoja ja rakennuksia sekä kirkkoja ja kalmistoja. Alueen kylät ja kalmistot ovat monimuotoisia ja niiden kerroksellisuudessa näkyy oman aikansa historia ja aatemaailma. Kenttätöiden kuvamateriaali ja haastattelut ovat Suomalaisen Kirjallisuuden Seuran kuva-arkistossa. Tarkempi etnografinen kuvaus on vastikkeena olevassa teoksessa ”Turjanrannan pomorikylät”.
Sisämaassa sijaitseva Varzugan kylä on mainittu kirjallisuudessa jo 1400-luvulla. Uusi tutkimusalue ulottuu Varzugajoen suulla sijaitsevasta Kuusiniemestä itään pieniin kyliin, joiden tämänhetkisestä kulttuurista ja luonnosta tiedetään kovin vähän. Kylissä asutaan kaukana suurista taajamista, joten kylien perifeerisyys tekee siitä kiintoisan tutkimusalueen. Millainen merkitys tiettömyydellä on kylien toiminnallisuuteen ja ihmisten väliseen vuorovaikutukseen? Kyliä yhdistävänä ja erottavana luonnontekijänä ovat joet. Tutkimushankkeen tavoitteena on selvittää, mitkä ovat niitä tekijöitä, ominaisuuksia ja ilmenemismuotoja, joita paikalliset ihmiset pitävät kulttuurin ja luonnon kannalta merkittävinä ja säilyttämisen arvoisina myös tulevaisuudessa. Millaisia muutoksia luonnossa on tapahtunut ja miten asukkaat kokevat ne? Mikä on ihmisen ja luonnon suhde paikallisella tasolla?
Tavoitteenamme on tehdä kenttätyön tuloksista sekä multimedianäyttely että julkaisu. Aineistoa voivat hyödyntää kulttuurista ja luonnosta kiinnostuneet henkilöt, reilut reissaajat, eri alojen tutkijat ja matkailuyrittäjät. Aineisto täydentää Suomen Kirjallisuuden Seuran kuva-arkistossa olevaa työryhmän kuvamateriaalia.

The Secret World of Moths is an upbeat adventure into the world of butterflies and inner structures of the insect world. It gives us a unique glimpse of the macroscopic world around us that normally remains virtually unnoticeable.

The movie traverses from the equator to the polar circle with different butterfly species. The two extreme life environments help us to comprehend the life’s diversity, fragility and capacity for renewal.

The movie makes use of 3D x-ray tomography to investigate the world of insects at the microscopic level.

Additionally, parts of the movie are filmed in Uganda, the Finnish Lake District, and in Finnish Lapland. The movie combines strong cinematic expression with science-based approach to nature. The movie is intended for the general public and is suitable for the whole family. The planetarium format poses special challenges for production, yet on the other hand, the hemispherical-shaped canvas arching over the entire auditorium offers unprecedented opportunities to make an exquisite movie with attractive visual expression. The movie’s world is comprised of butterflies and other insects, but it eventually unfolds to address the fundamental questions of life.

The themes of the continuous cycle of life, death and reproduction take us to contemplate the carrying capacity of our planet and the role of humans and various animal species in a single all-encompassing ecosystem, the planet Earth. 

The movie is made using our proprietary 3D motor that makes tomography technology accessible to the general public. Data for the movie is generated in collaboration with research scientists from different disciplines from various parts of Europe. The movie explores our arctic environment in an entirely new way.

In 2013, the most popular movies screened in Heureka’s planetarium attracted 50,000–60,000 spectators. The movies also have a life cycle longer than that of a conventional theatre distribution, as they may stay in the repertoire for several years. There is also considerable potential for attracting an international audience. Science centres and planetariums around the world are constantly lacking high-quality content. 

We aim to attract 50,000 spectators in Finland during the first year of screening, which is an exceptionally high figure for a short film. For the spectators, both adults and children, the movie provides an exceptional perspective to the surrounding nature and life on Earth. Drawing upon a science-based view, this artistically distinctive cinematic work is the first Finnish planetarium movie intended for the general public.
