WHAT IS THIS?

We Jazz 2013 Documentary Package

WHAT DO YOU GET?

A We Jazz 2013 documentary film by director Petri Luukkainen (DVD), We Jazz Loft Sessions in 3D audio CD, a print magazine of approximately 100 pages with photography by Miikka Pirinen and Maarit Kytöharju, an exclusive We Jazz 2014 preview poster. All of the material is to be released only with this package.

WHY?

1) We are stunned by the quality of the material available from We Jazz 2013 2) we think it’s important to document what happens in the scene now, not only for present audiences but also for later generations of music enthusiasts 3) we have received some encouraging comments regarding the possible release, and wish to follow up on that with our audience.

HOW WILL WE USE THE MONEY?

The budget for this project consists of, for example, printing costs, postage and copyright costs plus the fees for the editing of the film and the audio, editing the print magazine and photographers’ fees, in other words making it possible for the doers to do. Our minimum goal will make the project possible with reduced budget and all potential profit from the project will go directly into funding future We Jazz projects.

WHAT WAS WE JAZZ 2013?

The Helsinki-based creative office We Jazz launched a new week-long jazz event, an installation or utopia of sorts, on December 9–14 2013. The program featured top Finnish and international jazz acts, and also conceptually challenged the traditional limits of live music performance.

We had tons of fun and wanted to also document what happens, bringing together film, photography and audio recordings. This, we feel is important in order to preserve a lasting document of what really happened during this time and how jazz in Helsinki sounded like in 2013. This all is equally meant for those who were there and those who couldn’t be there.

WHO ARE THE DOCUMENTARISTS?

We Jazz 2013 was documented by some of our favorite professionals in their respective fields. The We Jazz 2013 film was shot and will be directed by filmmaker Petri Luukkainen of My Stuff fame, and produced by Unifilm Ltd, who share the Helsinki office with We Jazz. The concert audio was recorded and will be mixed by Abdissa Assefa, who has been a vital part of the recording team of the recent Timo Lassy releases, the behind the scenes photographs were taken by Miikka Pirinen and Maarit Kytöharju.

We are lucky to call all these very talented people our friends. This project to raise funds for the release, then, is not only that but also our celebration of the work of all people involved in making We Jazz 2013 happen.

AND THEN?

The We Jazz 2013 documentary package includes a DVD, a CD, a print magazine and the We Jazz 2014 preview poster. All of these products will only be produced if the crowd funding initiative is successful. All of the material exists presently in a raw form, from which it will be edited to be published pending the success of the crowd funding.

The We Jazz 2013 documentary film by Petri Luukkainen features both the artists and the audience and includes interviews with many of the event’s makers. The We Jazz Loft Sessions in 3D performance took place at Kuudes linja on December 10 and included improvised future jazz by the trio of Teppo Mäkynen, Aki Rissanen and Abdissa Assefa. Thus far, the music was heard only there and then. The unreleased photography by Miikka Pirinen and Maarit Kytöharju present the mood behind the scenes in their intimate beauty. The We Jazz 2014 preview poster released only here will evoke feelings from the upcoming event.

The We Jazz 2013 documentary package can be ordered to be shipped internationally, to be shipped within Finland, ot to be picked up at a Helsinki location to be announced upon it’s completion. There is also a low-cost digital download option available including a unique code for downloading the film + audio content. The package will be delivered in September 2014.

Yksin – sotaelokuva

Yksin on sotatraumoja käsittelevä elokuva. Selviytymisarina yksin vihollisen keskelle jääneestä sotilaasta, jolla on seuranaan vain omat ajatukset ja pelon luomat hallusinaatiot.

Olemme av-alan ammattilaisista koostuva kaveriporukka, joka on tehnyt yhdessä lyhytelokuvia useamman vuoden. Toistaiseksi olemme kustantaneet elokuvamme itse, sekä toteuttaneet ne oman työmme ohella. Tulevana kesänä olemme kuvaamassa ensimmäistä pitkää elokuvaamme ja sen on tarkoitus valmistua vuonna 2016. Tähän haemme nyt rahoitusta.

Käytössämme on jo huippulaitteisto ja elokuvatason äänitysstudio, mutta tekeminen on silti kallista. Vaikka kalustomme on ammattitasoinen, on lisäkalustoa vuokrattava, jotta saamme haluamamme näköisen ja kuuloisen lopputuloksen.

Tavoitteenamme on saada elokuva teatterilevitykseen ja aiomme lähettää sen kaikille mahdollisille elokuvafestivaaleille ympäri maailman.

Näyttelijät ovat Teatterikorkeakoulun opiskelijoita, joilla on jo kokemusta niin teatterilavoilta, kuin kotimaisista elokuvista. Haluamme tarjota heille ammatimaisen työskentely-ympäristön, jotta he pystyvät keskittymään suorituksiinsa ilman häiriöitä ja näyttämään todellisen osaamisensa.

Käsikirjoituksesta vastaa Matti Nousiainen veljensä kirjailija-käsikirjoittaja Miika Nousiaisen opastuksella ja avustuksella.

Elokuvan ohjaa ja tuottaa myös Matti Nousiainen. Hän työskentelee Helsingin Sanomien HSTV:n vastaavana kuvatuottajana ja visuaalisena vastaavana. Hänellä on myös pitkä kokemus fiktion, uutis- ja ajankohtaisohjelmien suunnittelusta, ohjauksesta ja jälkitöistä.

Elokuvien äänistä vastaa Bad Sauna äänistudio. Heillä on vuosikymmenien kokemus äänentuottamisesta ja masteroinnista. Asiakkaina ovat olleet muun muassa kotimaassa Monsp Records Oy, Sibelius-Akatemia, KHY Suomen Musiikki Oy , Paulig, Mainostoimisto SEK, sekä ulkomaalaisia, kuten FabFilter Software Instruments, Camel Audio ja Acustica Audio

Kuvaajana toimii Seppo Kinnari. Hän toiminut kuvaajana, valaisijana, kamera-assistenttina ja muissa sekalaisissa tehtävissä lukuisissa kotimaisissa suurtuotannoissa, tunnetuimpina Putous, Kimmo, Siskonpeti, Härmä ja Mitä tuli tehtyä.

PYRO -elokuva on vahva kertomus palokuntalaisuudesta, vapaaehtoistyöstä, turvallisuudesta sekä toisten auttamisesta. Tämän fiktiivisen elokuvan tapahtumat sijoittuvat lähitulevaisuuteen, jossa taloudellinen taantuma on lamauttanut myös palo- ja pelastuslaitoksen. Yleistä turvallisuutta ylläpidetään vajaalla miehistöllä ja vapaaehtoisilla. Samaan aikaan kaupunkia uhkaa laajamittainen tuhopolttojen sarja, joka vaarantaa koko kaupungin tulevaisuuden, muistuttaen meitä palo- ja pelastuslaitoksen tärkeydestä.

PYRO -elokuvan tarkoituksena on vahvistaa osaltaan vapaaehtoispalokuntatoimintaa Suomessa sekä toimia innoittajana palokuntatoimintaan.

Elokuva tukee osaltaan Palokuntatoimintaa Suomessa 175 -vuotta -tapahtumaa. Se toteutetaan täysin talkootyönä ja yhteistyössä Turun VPK:n, sekä lukuisten paikallisten yritysten kanssa. Elokuvan ensi-iltaa on kaavailtu vietettävän vuonna 2014, Teksasissa, South Texas Underground  -elokuvajuhlilla, jonka jälkeen elokuvaa tarjotaan mahdollisimman laajaan kansainväliseen levitykseen.

A couple of years ago, I found a family archive of photographs and other documents from the 1970’s that concerned the Finnish Communist movement “taistolaisuus”. This is when the short film Singing for Lenin got started. As I browsed through the pictures, I realized how distant the era seemed, even though there were many familiar faces in the photos. In this experimental film I will look at the movement with contemporary eyes. I wonder if my generation, who grew up in the 1980’s, could understand a time that ended before we were born and that still divides opinions so strongly. The screenplay of my film is partly based on interviews with participants of the 70’s student movement.

The frame for the production of Singing for Lenin is Le Fresnoy, a post-graduate studio program for young artists in France. The film will be shot in the end of March in Finland and the post-production will take place in Le Fresnoy. The film will premiere in June 2014. Le Fresnoy partially funds the film and I have received a grant from AVEK – the Promotion Center for Audiovisual Culture. However, this is unfortunately not enough to complete the film. The production is not particularly expensive but it would be great if we didn’t have to compromise too much artistically or technically. We would still need more funds for renting the equipment and I would like to pay the participating professionals a decent fee for their work.

Fictional contemporary scenes and archive material alternate in the film. It pictures one day from dawn to dusk in an old summer cottage. The protagonists, two women and a man in their early 30’s and a six-year-old girl discuss an archive left by parents who were still young when they passed away. The characters go through old letters, photographs and other material from a time that seems distant but when talking to people who witnessed it they experience something familiar. The voices of former Communist activists tell about the events, each one from their own point of view. In the film, I look for a relationship with a period, that many have already tried to forget.

Eräänä aamuna neljännesvuosisata sitten berliiniläinen opettaja istui bussipysäkillä. Sama natsitarra oli koristanut katutolppaa jo viikkojen ajan. Opettaja päätti töistä tullessaan poistaa sen.

Irmela Mensah-Schramm on nyt 67-vuotias berliiniläinen eläkeläisrouva. Viimeisen 28 vuoden ajan hän on joka aamu lähtenyt ulos kaduille tuhoamaan jokaisen löytämänsä rasistisen, juutalais- tai homovastaisen graffitin, tarran ja julisteen.

Irmelan työkalut ovat kynsilakanpoistoaine, skrapa, lokikirja ja spray-maalitölkki. Näihin vihanpuhdistusvälineisiin hän käyttää joka kuukausi eläkkeestään satoja euroja ja kuljettaa niitä mukanaan kaikkialle. Ennen kohteen lopullista tuhoamista Irmela ottaa pienellä pokkarikamerallaan kuvan kohteesta ja tekee merkinnän lokikirjaansa. Merkintöjä on kertynyt yli 130 000.

Partioidessaan katuja Irmela törmää usein uusnatseihin ja muihin rasistisiin ryhmiin. Häntä uhkaillaan ja hänelle kirjoitetaan kaduille viestejä kuten ”Schramm, me saamme sinut.” Irmelasta on tullut jonkinlainen vihan katalysaattori – osa hänen poistamastaan vihasta jää kuitenkin häneen.

Parannuttuaan muutama vuosi sitten rintasyövästä, hänen aktivisminsa muuttui kutsumukseksi. Se on Irmelan elämäntehtävä josta hänen yksityis-elämänsä kärsii. Irmela kokee olevansa yksin ja tuntee olevansa viallinen. Ehkä siksi hän haluaa siivota maailman, korjata sen.

Elokuva on ohjaajien tarina tästä ihmeellisestä naisesta joka taistelee vihaa vastaan, mutta kaikessa vahvuudessaan silti hyvin haavoittuvainen.

Hei kaikki,

Olemme ryhmä nuoria televisio- ja elokuva-alan ihmisiä Italiasta, Suomesta, Saksasta ja Puolasta. Olemme kuvanneet berliiniläistä teräsrouva Irmelaa muiden töidemme ohella jo muutaman vuoden ajan. Olemme aikaansaavia ja ihan taitaviakin työssämme. Tähän mennessä elokuviamme ja TV-sarjojamme on esitetty televisiossa tai festivaaleilla ympäri maailmaa Italiassa, Saksassa, Suomessa, Virossa, Intiassa, Ruotsissa, Japanissa, Yhdysvalloissa, Unkarissa, Kanadassa, Espanjassa, Puerto Ricossa, Itävallassa ja Sveitsissä (pahoittelemme pitkää listaa, yritämme vain tehdä vaikutuksen).

Olemme saaneet tähän intohimoiseen hankkeeseemme tukea bloggareilta, katutaiteilijoilta, toimittajilta, kansalaisjärjestöiltä, festivaaleilta ja instituutioilta. Projektia on rahoittanut  Italian elokuvarahasto, yksityiset säätiöt, sen tuottajat – joskus olemme käyneet myös omilla taskuillamme.

Saamme kuvaukset päätökseen kesällä 2013 ja meiltä puuttuu vielä osa jälkituotantobudjetistamme. Dokumenttielokuvalle jälkituotanto merkitsee sitä vaihetta kun elokuva todella tehdään. Enemmän rahaa tarkoittaa enemmän aikaa editointiin, parempaa äänisuunnittelua, ilmaisullisempaa musiikkia, enemmän DVD-extroja ja näkyvämpää kampanjointia. Aiomme joka tapauksessa tehdä elokuvan valmiiksi, mutta olemme nöyrän kiitollisia kaikesta antamastanne tuesta. Meistä se on pieni ihme että joku haluaa tukea meitä näin!

Elokuva valmistuu ja vastineet toimitetaan viimeistään joulukuussa 2013, juuri ennen joulua. Osa vastineista kuten Flow:n liput (Kiitos FLOW FESTIVAL!), workshopit ja valokuvanäyttelyt toimitetaan tietysti juuri silloin kun niiden aika on.

Projekti merkitsee meille elokuvan tekemisen lisäksi mahdollisuutta taistella rasismia vastaan Irmelan joukko-osastona. Olemme valmiita potkaisemaan oman osuutemme käyntiin. Siitä tulee hauskaa.

One morning a quarter century ago a school teacher from Berlin was sitting at a bus stop.

Same old Nazi sticker had been there for weeks already without anyone taking it off. She decided that she had to do it after her work that day.

Irmela Mensah Schramm is nowadays a 67-year-old lady living in Berlin. For the last 28 years she has been going out every morning searching racist, homophobic and anti-Semitic graffiti, posters or stickers to scratch off or erase.

Irmela’s tools are nail polish remover, a scrap, a logbook and a spray paint. She spends hundreds of euros from her pension on these hate-removal tools every month and takes them with her everywhere. Before the object is destroyed Irmela takes a picture with her little camera and makes a note in her logbook. There are over 130 000 notes.

Often while scouting the streets she bumps into neo – Nazis and other racist groups. She is being threatened and left messages on the wall saying ”Schramm, we are gonna get you”. Irmela has become a kind of hatred catalyst – sometimes the hate stays in her.

After defeating her breast cancer couple of years ago, her activity changed and became her mission. Now it’s her reason for living, to the detriment of friends and loved ones. Irmela feels herself lonely with the feeling of being improper and perhaps therefore she want’s to clean the world, or fix it.

Through the authors first-person report, the film shows the vulnerabilities of a character that switch from moments of sensitivity to episodes of deep anger against everything that time hasn’t deleted.

LETTER TO PATRONS

We are a group of young Italian, Polish, Finnish and German TV and movie professionals who have been filming this Berlin super lady, Irmela Mensah Schramm, besides our other jobs for the last couple of years. We are hard working and skillful people and the films and TV-series that we have been working with this far have been broadcast or screened in Italy, Germany, Finland, Estonia, India, Sweden, Japan, USA, Hungary, Canada, Spain, Porto Rico, Austria, Switzerland. (Sorry for the long list, we just try to impress you).

This passionate project has been helped and sustained by a lot of people: bloggers, street artists, journalists, civil rights organizations, festivals and institutions. We managed to finance our project this far with the help from Italian Film Funds, private foundations and producers and little from our own pockets too.

The shootings will be finished within this summer 2013, but we are still missing some of our post production budget. Post production means everything for a documentary film. That’s when the movie is really made. More money means more time for editing, better sound design, a richer music, more extras and a louder promotion. We are going to finish the movie anyway, but we are the most grateful for any support. We think it’s a little miracle that someone wants to support us like this.

The film and perks are delivered in December 2013, just before Christmas. Some of the perks, such as FLOW- tickets, (Thank you FLOW FESTIVAL!!!) workshops or exhibitions are delivered when they take place  – way before December.

We consider this project not only as a film but also a possibility for us to be part of global movement against racism, and now we are ready to kick it and spread it all over the world. And it will be fun.

Bambi on 2010-luvun sukupolvikertomus eksymisestä ja itsensä löytämisestä. Bambi on nuorten tekijöiden intohimoprojekti, joka on pakko tehdä.

Elokuva vie meidät uuden ajan runotytön pään sisälle, suuren kaupungin vimmaiseen ja eksyttävään yöhön. Kaikkien haluama sankaritar juoksee huonosta valinnasta toiseen etsiessään rakkautta ja rohkeutta vailla uskoa kumpaankaan. Vasta kiero romanssi toisen ulkopuolisen kanssa saa hänet kyseenalaistamaan myrkylliset kuvionsa.

Tyttö viipyilee itsevarmuusvyöhykkeellään klubilla, kun hän näkee linnunpojan näköisen nuoren miehen. He päätyvät absurdeille jatkoille ja alkavat jonkinlaiseen suhteeseen. Mutta miten olla läsnä, jos ei pidä itsestään? Toinen heistä häpeää omaa maailmaansa köyhässä lähiössä ja tavoittelee vimmaisesti kauneutta ja hohtoa. Toinen taas on päätynyt tuohon haluttuun elämäntyyliin, mutta kamppailee alakuloisen kyynisyytensä ja pinnallisen todellisuutensa välillä.

Kertojallamme on painava menneisyys. Jonkinlainen tulevaisuus pitäisi keksiä. Mutta minne ihmiset menevät, kun niiden täytyy mennä? Omat sirpaleet pitää siis kerätä. Ja sanoa viimeinen sana.

Kyseessä on 40 minuutin rohkea art house -draama, joka toteutetaan voittoa tavoittelematta mutta erittäin kunnianhimoisesti. Laaja tekijäjoukkomme koostuu alan opiskelijoista ja työläisistä, jotka ovat kaikki koko sydämestään mukana.

Elokuva kuvataan keväällä 2015 ja leikataan saman kevään loppuun mennessä. Kuvan ja äänen jälkityöt tehdään kesän aikana ja teoksen valmistuminen on päätetty syksyksi 2015.

Elokuvaa on tarkoitus levittää kotimaisille ja ulkomaisille festareille ja myöhemmin julkaista myös netissä.

Vaikka olemme saaneet kaikki tekijät sekä osan tiloista, toimijoista ja kalustosta ilmaiseksi käyttöömme, tarvitsemme rahallista lisätukea, jotta pääsemme tekijöiden arvoiseen lopputulokseen.

Toivomme rahaa erityisesti cateringia, kuljetuksia ja joitakin maski – ja lavastehankintoja varten. Jos saamme kokoon tarvitsemamme 2000 euroa, voimme ennen kaikkea tarjota kuvauspäivinä lämpimän aterian työryhmälle, joka antaa aikaansa ja osaamistaan pyytämättä mitään vastineeksi.

Jos saamme enemmän rahaa käyttöömme, pystymme panostamaan vielä enemmän kuvaan ja ääneen. Olemme turvatumpia mahdollisia vastoinkäymisiä varten ja pystymme tuottamaan kansainvälisen tason teoksen.

Jimi Tenor, Jori Hulkkonen, Orkidea, Randy Barracuda, Ural 13 Diktators, Acid Kings, Mika Vainio, Hannu Ikola, Mono Junk

In the film, electronic music is discussed from the point of view of the artists. What are their early influences? How did their style develop? What has been the role of their environment? It is a form of music that is often perceived as cold and lifeless by outsiders, but in the eyes of the artists it is a multifaceted and soulful way of life.

The movie is not an overview of the Finnish Techno scene nor a chronicle. Many of the artists are virtually unknown in Finland, but have a large fanbase outside their home country. Machine Soul is a homage to the pioneers and newcomers of the Finnish Electronic music scene.
