Making the documentary is very important for Rovaniemi-based company Flatlight Creative House, and especially for director Miikka Niemi. Miikka was shooting a freestyle skiing film when Pekka’s accident happened right in front of his eyes. This ended both the shooting of the film and Pekka’s successful freestyle skiing career. Miikka says, “It’s really important to tell Pekka’s story. His positive attitude and determination will encourage everybody to push their personal limits.”

Five years ago, 20-year-old Pekka wanted to become the best freestyle skier in the world. His life and future plans were all about freestyle skiing. The story of this young man’s recovery from a brain injury inspired not just the freestyle skiing community, but others, too. In this documentary we want to show the last five years of Pekka’s remarkable turnaround, and talk about his future. We want people to see a side of Pekka’s story that they haven’t yet seen in the media. We have already shot a lot of material for New Run, but there are still many scenes to be filmed.

We would like you to join us on this journey, and help to make this documentary a reality. With the campaign at Mesenaatti, we will fund the screenwriting process, development, and post production of the documentary. Our plan is to make this film internationally renowned and an inspiration for all, and tell Pekka’s story from a different point-of-view.

The Secret World of Moths is an upbeat adventure into the world of butterflies and inner structures of the insect world. It gives us a unique glimpse of the macroscopic world around us that normally remains virtually unnoticeable.

The movie traverses from the equator to the polar circle with different butterfly species. The two extreme life environments help us to comprehend the life’s diversity, fragility and capacity for renewal.

The movie makes use of 3D x-ray tomography to investigate the world of insects at the microscopic level.

Additionally, parts of the movie are filmed in Uganda, the Finnish Lake District, and in Finnish Lapland. The movie combines strong cinematic expression with science-based approach to nature. The movie is intended for the general public and is suitable for the whole family. The planetarium format poses special challenges for production, yet on the other hand, the hemispherical-shaped canvas arching over the entire auditorium offers unprecedented opportunities to make an exquisite movie with attractive visual expression. The movie’s world is comprised of butterflies and other insects, but it eventually unfolds to address the fundamental questions of life.

The themes of the continuous cycle of life, death and reproduction take us to contemplate the carrying capacity of our planet and the role of humans and various animal species in a single all-encompassing ecosystem, the planet Earth. 

The movie is made using our proprietary 3D motor that makes tomography technology accessible to the general public. Data for the movie is generated in collaboration with research scientists from different disciplines from various parts of Europe. The movie explores our arctic environment in an entirely new way.

In 2013, the most popular movies screened in Heureka’s planetarium attracted 50,000–60,000 spectators. The movies also have a life cycle longer than that of a conventional theatre distribution, as they may stay in the repertoire for several years. There is also considerable potential for attracting an international audience. Science centres and planetariums around the world are constantly lacking high-quality content. 

We aim to attract 50,000 spectators in Finland during the first year of screening, which is an exceptionally high figure for a short film. For the spectators, both adults and children, the movie provides an exceptional perspective to the surrounding nature and life on Earth. Drawing upon a science-based view, this artistically distinctive cinematic work is the first Finnish planetarium movie intended for the general public.

Hurmaava Onnellinen prinssi -esitys yhdistää sirkusta, teatteria ja lasten tekemää animaatiota kertoakseen tarinan pääskystä, joka jää auttamaan kultaista prinssipatsasta. Oscar Wilden tekstiin pohjautuvassa iki-ihanassa sadussa prinssipatsas pyytää muuttomatkalla olevaa pääskyä jäämään ja auttamaan prinssiä viemällä tämän jalokivet ja kultauksen köyhille kaupunkilaisille. Pääsky jää – ja oppii elämästä ja myötätunnosta niin paljon, ettei enää halua lähteä. Ilma-akrobatia, jongleeraus ja lasten animaatio luovat ihmeellisen maailman.

Esitys saa ensi-iltansa syksyllä 2015 – mutta sitä ennen sen maailmaa valmistetaan yhteistyössä lasten kanssa koko kevään 2015 ajan. Jotta esitys voidaan toteuttaa tällä tavoin, tarvitaan hidas harjoitusprosessi ja yhteistä aikaa – tästä syystä tarvitsemme sinun apuasi.

Olemme järjestäneet pidemmän pajan lasten kanssa yhteistyössä Turun Seikkailupuiston kanssa. Työryhmään kuuluvat lapset tekevät käsikirjoitusta, piirtävät, animoivat ja pohtivat roolihahmojen luonteita. Haluamme työskennellä myös nopeammin kouluissa – järjestämme koululuokkien työpajoja, 2 x 1,5h. Valmiin esityksen kesto on n. 50 minuuttia ja kohderyhmä 8-12-vuotiaat sekä aikuiset. Esitys saa ensi-iltansa Helsingin Malmintalossa ja sitä esitetään myöhemmin syksyllä Turun Seikkailupuistossa.

Our project

We’re three young Finnish women raising funds to complete our surf documentary on Marco Polo, Peruvian surfer and fisherman from a small village of Lobitos. We have loads of good material that is just waiting to be turned into a documentary film for both domestic and foreign markets!

The main character of our film is the 29-year-old surfer, whose life seems to be as colourful as the life of the famous explorer, after whom our guy was once named. In Lobitos, the village situated on the coast of Northern Peru, there’s hardly anyone who wouldn’t know Marco Polo, or Bokita like his friends call him (the nickname refers to his big smiling mouth, mouth in Spanish is ‘boca’).

Bokita is known for surfing fearlessly without survival instinct of any kind, challenging even the professionals in their own game. This man is nevertheless a humble villager who, unlike the self-conscious trendy surfers listening to reggae, puts on a CD of cumbia, Peruvian village music dealing with heartaches. He is the representative of uniqueness, losses and unpredictability of life, a combination that can be used to describe the history of Lobitos too.

The village is a world-known surf spot whose waves attract people from pro-surfers to tourists to visit Lobitos. Yet only few visitors realize what kinds of issues the villagers are dealing with; there’s lack of drinkable water, oil drilling and climate change have serious effects on the fishermen’s livelihood and corruption is a visible part of this small community. The purpose of our documentary is to show the many faces of Lobitos and contemplate on the role of the world famous trendy sport in this village’s life.

The idea for the documentary was born at the end of 2013 while Jelena and Aino were volunteering in Lobitos. Back then we got to know Marco Polo and experience the absurdity of everyday life in Lobitos. From the beginning the belief in the project was so strong that even the lack of external funding or a clear plan, did not stop us to go on. We decided to go and film the document at the end of the year 2014. The best part is that even the main character didn’t believe this to be true, not even the moment we saw him the next year.

Travel expenses and the filming gear were mainly self-funded with the exception of few donations we got from private persons and companies. We’re applying funding through the MESENAATTI.ME –crowd funding to cover the post-production expenses to be able to finish this project in a desired way and make possible the marketing and screening of the film outside Finland.

Libros a Lobitos

Libros A Lobitos is a grass-roots literacy project serving the small coastal community of Lobitos, Peru. It was founded by passionate educators who, after a year of teaching in the local school, realized that English education (while important) was blatantly a secondary concern when compared to more basic educational needs. A community-wide survey that revealed whisperings of illiteracy in Lobitos’ older generations contributed to the inspiration to establish a program that would not only promote literacy but also work to ignite a love of literature and aid in fostering a generation of young readers.

The Documentary of Teräsvaari

The documentary Teräsvaari follows Esko Ketola, a 72-year-old, four-time powerlifting world champion on the way to his last world championship event. Esko Ketola, a four-time powerlifting world champion is injured just before the world championship event in 2013. But this 72-year-old strongman won’t give up his dream of a fifth championship. Esko must make a difficult choice: will he put his health at risk to chase the dream?

ABOUT THE MOVIE

Veneh is a poetic depiction of transition and the end of childhood. It tells of a young Karelian bride, who is about to leave her home. She is prepared for her wedding, which in Karelia was a long process. The movie follows traditional rituals, colliding the genres of ethnographic and drama film with music and dance video styles.

WHAT KARELIAN LANGUAGE

The language used in the film is Karelian, especially Olonets Karelian dialect. Karelians are indigenous people in a region which is divided by the Finnish-Russian border. The language is 1200-years-old and in older times Karelian culture was strong and widely spread. In Russia Karelian was recognized as a separate language already in the 18th century, but not before 2009 it got its official minority language status in Finland. Nowadays the distinctive Karelian culture and language face the risk of extinction in both countries.
Veneh is the first film done in Karelian. Art projects like ours are essentially important when strengthening the minority language and ethnic identity.

TO WHOM?

The aim of our film is to raise public interest in the traditions and language of Karelians. It is especially focused on youth and young adults.
Duration of the film will be 30 minutes, which enables the movie to be presented at various film festivals, television, events and educational projects.

ABOUT THE PROJECT

The script writer, director and producer of the film is dance artist Jyrki Haapala, director of photography is visual artist Tero Puha, music will be composed by folk musician Saija Teirikangas and the sound design is done by musician Mikko Väärälä.
The film material was filmed during summer and autumn 2013. With the 4000 € gathered with Mesenaatti crowdfunding we are able to start and complete the post production including music composition, recording, sound design, film edit and colour grading. The film will be completed by the end of year 2014.

Loud Silents Festival gathers groups of people under the same roof to enjoy the wonderful alliance of silent films and live music. Embracing the Finnish silent film community and film tradition is part of the organization’s agenda – thus, we wish to empower the audience by giving them tools to support and fund our highly ambitious project.

Silent film with live accompaniment is an experience that shakes you to your core. Each show becomes a unique spectacle, something that cannot be reproduced or digitally distributed. Producing the shows takes not only a lot of time, but also cold, hard cash.

When producing film screenings, one needs to pay for screening rights and also rent either the digital copy or a film reel, and in addition you need premises, projectors and people to operate the equipment. With live band performances, you need an array of speakers, microphones, PA and a crew to help out, not to mention the band’s fees and training hours. With Loud Silents Festival, we are paying for two.

When the festival debuted in 2013, we received a notable amount of media attention; Loud Silents was covered by e.g. Aamulehti, Helsingin Sanomat, Turun Sanomat, Finnish Broadcasting Company, Image, Sue, Classic Radio, Radio City, and also a number of underground media outlets. To add to the stories by traditional medias, we actively produce content for our social media channels and our website, loudsilents.com

Last year our audience consisted mainly of university students and lower-middle class taking interest in cultural events. This year we hope to attract more varied groups by including a family-friendly Chaplin screening to the mix. Detailed info about the full program can be found in our home page.

Suurelta osin omarahoitteisena tehty elokuva on viimeisen vuoden ajan yrittänyt löytää väyliä suurempaan esille pääsyyn elokuvateattereissa ja tv-kanavilla. Elokuvaa esitettiin 2013 kesällä Joensuun Savon Kinoissa ja se sai 650 katsojan näkyvyyden 11 esityksessä. Lisäksi elokuva pääsi Rokumentin esitykseen syksyllä 2013, sen kaksi esitystä olivat loppuunmyytyjä.

OOTHAN VIELÄ SYNOPSIS
Oothan vielä kertoo legendaarisen joensuulaisen hotelli- kulttuuriravintola Wanhan Jokelan viimeisistä kolmesta kuukaudesta ja kansalaisaktiivien taistelusta kiinteistön suojelun puolesta. Se kertoo tarinoiden, musiikin ja laulujen kautta paikasta, jonka vertaisia ei Suomessa enää ole.

Toisinaan kaupunkilaisille jatkuvana rakennustyömaana näyttäytyvä Joensuu todisti 2012 vuoden loppupuolella kiihkeän suojelukamppailun Jokelan säilyttämisen puolesta. Sadat ihmiset marssivat kaupungintalolle vaatiakseen päättäjiä suojelemaan kiinteistöä purkusuunnitelmilta. Miksi tämä pieni ja ulkoa ränsistynyt kulttuuriravintola oli ja on edelleen niin tärkeä asia ihmisille?

Arto Tuohimaan ohjaama elokuva seuraa läheltä yhtyeen viimeistä kahta vuotta ja arkea kiertueella, studiossa ja treenikämpällä.

PMMP toimi alusta alkaen samalla kokoonpanolla ja “tehdään itse”-mentaliteetilla, joka poikkeaa totutuista populaarimusiikin tekemisen prosessista. Elokuva antaa puheenvuoron myös muille vähemmän julkisuudessa esillä olleille yhtyeen jäsenille rikkoen suurelle yleisölle tuttua Paula ja Mira -asetelmaa.

Kaksi vuotta kestänyt kuvausjakso sekä jälkityöt on toteutettu bändin inspiroimassa hengessä omaehtoisesti, ja elokuva on tehty käytännössä kokonaan pienen tekijäjoukon talkootyönä.
Elokuvan ainoa rahoitus, Musiikin Edistämissäätiöltä saatu 4000 € kattaa n. 75 % elokuvan tekijänoikeuskustannuksista pohjoismaisen festivaalilevityksen osalta. Tuotanto on muuten hoidettu omakustanteisesti.

Elokuvalle on tähän mennessä sovittu kaksi esitystä Helsingin Docpoint-festivaalin yhteyteen, mutta muita esityksiä ei toistaiseksi ole tiedossa. Kampanjan tarkoituksena on kattaa elokuvan Video On Demand – jakelusta syntyvät kustannukset sekä mahdollisten erikoisnäytösten järjestämiskulut.

Kampanjan tuotolla katetaan mm:
– laajemmasta levityksestä aiheutuvat tekijänoikeuskorvaukset
– markkinointimateriaalin sekä esityskopioiden valmistaminen
– elokuvan kääntämisestä sekä tekstittämisestä syntyvät kulut
– mahdollisten erikoisnäytösten järjestämisestä aiheutuvat kulut
– elokuvan extramateriaalin valmiiksisaattaminen
