artArctica festival 2016

The ecosystems and cultures of the Arctic are beautiful and inspiring – yet at the same time fragile. We believe that we have a lot to learn from people living in the Arctic, in closer connection to the world around them. That the Arctic is so much more than just an empty, icy landscape – it is alive, fascinating, full of stories.

We passionately believe the Arctic is an inspiring place, and we want to share this with you.

So we put together this festival.

Like a snowball turning into an avalanche, artArctica festival is a small idea grown big: we’re now hosting photography exhibitions, installations, dance and music performances, feature films and short film selections – and we are lucky to have participants from every corner of the Arctic: Greenland, Canada, Russia, Norway, Finland, Denmark, the Faroe Islands.

In the final stages of production, we have come a long way – and now we need your support to ensure we produce a high-quality event, for both artists and audience.

We still need to cover certain travel expenses for the artists, as well as production expenses like printing large-format photographs and securing royalties rights for the films. By supporting this project, you are directly supporting grass-roots art-making in the Arctic.

We are lucky to be supported by cultural foundations and grants, as well as various independent groups and
organisations – and we need one last nudge, and that’s you. It’s the person we’re making this festival for: the
Arctic enthusiast (even if you don’t know it yet), the artist, the admirer, the traveller, the story-teller. You. We
need you, because without you our festival is just a private show.

So help us make this festival a beautiful and unforgettable get-together – and be part of something bigger. Whether you can visit the festival, or live far away, but think this is the kind of thing that is worth happening, you can support us in one way or another.

The festival is partly funded by Kulturkontakt Nord and Letterstedtska föreningen.

It is happening in collaboration with the following organisations:

Global Music Centre (FI)
City-Sámit (FI)
Walhalla Film (FI)
Finnish Arctic Club (FI)
Arctic Museum Nanoq (FI)
Skábmagovat Film Festival (FI)
Uummannaq Polar Institute (GL)
Arctic Arts Institute (RU)

ENKEL is a traditional music girl band from Finland. We started playing together two years ago at the airport of Porto. At the time we found out that all of us have fairly relaxed travelling habits and decided to have a band with the idea of the best touring band in the world. Besides that we share the great passion towards traditional Finnish music, social folk dancing and storytelling.

The debut album of ENKEL, Wedding Night at the Vicarage will be released in January 2016. The album consists of traditional Finnish melodies and songs as well as own compositions in style of traditional music. In the band we like to concentrate in finding great but forgotten melodies from the Finnish archives and make them alive. The album is one step further in this project.

Our crowdfunding campaign is primarily aimed at mixing and mastering the album, and the album covers. The total budget for that is 5300€. At this point we are still missing 2500€. You can help us to get our album out there by ordering some ENKEL items which can be seen on the right. Thank you for your support and see you!

Our aim is to cover the costs of a tourbus so the concerts in Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, Germany, Lithuania and Estonia could be possible. We do this for the music and hope to get a chance to show where a dedicated work with a large ensemble can lead to.

★★★★★

“One of the most exciting and definitely the best albums of this year (…) Like poetry.”

Jani Ekblom, Desibeli

“Hum deserves attention first and foremost for its musical virtues: works composed for the eleven person Hendectet-collective are bold and rowdy, while also being relaxed; permeated by a strong visions of their own.” Harri Uusitorppa, Helsingin Sanomat

Markus Pesonen Hendectet is an inventive eleven-piece orchestra uniting an international group of musicians who weave their diverse musical skills into audacious patterns. Following the critically acclaimed release of Hum in 2011, the band is now releasing its second album, Padme, on the Danish label and musician-run collective Barefoot Records.

The band enlivens a vast sound terrain stretching from contrabass clarinet to piccolo and further expanded by electronics, where musicians create an electrifying spectrum of emotions and atmospheres. On a sonic journey to faraway places one gets to experience the Nordic inner landscape and an Indian traffic jam, wild sounds of the jungle and gentle bossa nova in Russian. Existing in the space between the extremities, Markus Pesonen Hendectet’s music brings a listener into acute awareness of the physical presence of sound.

A hendectet’s song enters into a spectacular chemical reaction with place and time, rejuvenating with each performance. That is, not only there’s room for improvisation, but also the process of composing continues on stage, being informed by improvisation and reacting to it. There are openings inside the compositions, which allow Pesonen as a conductor to take a lead and turn across traffic. Such twofold use of improvisation keeps up the heat of the band’s live performances.

“It is heart and sensitivity that propel this large band, and the six young horns in Pesonen’s collective seem to have more balls and recklessness than the whole Danish Radio Big Band combined.” Christian Munch-Hansen, Politiken (DK)

★★★★★

“Out of nowhere comes one of the highlights of the jazz year: a colourful, intense and fearless album that showcases the extraordinary, visionary composer and orchestra leader. Who the heck is this Pesonen?” Pentti Ronkanen, Keskisuomalainen

Markus Pesonen is a composer, sound artist and visual artist, creating sound and visual experiences in different contexts, from concerts and exhibitions to performances and shared spaces. He composes and creates with several music groups and is also working with dance, theatre, movies and meditation. Markus believes in open wordless communication, making space for everyone to find their own meaning.

“The outstanding album Hum seemed after the concert, though only as a prelude when the explosive 11-piece group stretched the songs on the stage to almost double.”  Harri Uusitorppa, Helsingin Sanomat

It is rare to tour independently with 11-piece band and I believe we can offer something unique into the selection of live music. Behind this project, there is years of work, handcraft of many top musicians and the support of several music lovers. We hope this shows in a way that its worth supporting this project.

Come with to the campaign and help us to make a success of the tour and so support the future of the band. New albums and concerts are already planned and the potential for growth is there.

The photography from the work Depth of Water is also offers. The exhibition is taking place in Berlin October 10th to November 14th. More info

In 2014 Markus exhibited in the Modern Art Museum of Mexico. One of his works was selected by Arte Vivo to be auctioned for the education and attention of the integral health of Mexico. He also exhibited in Bar Café 9 in Helsinki and Bucarelli 69 in Mexico City during 2014. In 2015 photography exhibitions will bring him to Xalapa, Cuernavaca and Mazatlán in Mexico as well as Los Angeles, London and Dublin.

Erehdys valittiin Radio Helsingin The New Music Shown viikon demoksi ja myös Soundi-lehti poimi sen demolaarista viikon parhaana. Erehdys inspiroi musiikkivideon tekoon: aloitin uskomattoman matkan ainutlaatuisen työryhmän kanssa. Video valittiin myös kilpailemaan parhaan musiikkivideon tittelistä Oulun Musiikkivideofestivaaleille.

Video:

Julkaisimme kahden kappaleen singlen Elämäsi Eteinen / Humallun Hurmiosta omakustanteena syyskuussa 2015.

http://sirjaetkonfuusio.bandcamp.com/

Kiitos.

Promokuva (Julia Mansikka)

Yhtye: Sirja Puurtinen: Laulu, viulu, akustinen kitara, koskettimet Ossi Nurmela: Sähkökitara Tommi Wehmas: Bassokitara Jussi Peevo: Rummut

Joukkorahoituksesta saaduilla varoilla rahoitamme määrästä riippuen instrumenttien ja äänityslaitteiden huollot, äänitystilan vuokran, masteroinnin ja mahdollisien lisäkäsien (esim. äänittäjä) palkat.

Tuija Rantalainen is a singersongwriter from Helsinki and in November she will release a new single and music video . The new song tells a story of an ordinary, homeless man and his dog. Last year Tuija spent some time in Paris and saw many homeless people with their dogs. The experience inspired her to create “Le Chien de Pont Neuf”.

Casting

The leading actor in Tuija’s video is ”Dakota”, a stray dog. The main male actor is Veini Nupponen. Also Tuija and her band’s musicians Timo Tuppurainen and
Juha Mäntylä perform on the video. Videos script was written by Tuija and Juha Sihtola will film and edit it.

Tuija Rantalainen

Tuija Rantalainen has released 4 albums and her songs can be heard in Radio Suomi and Swedens Sisuradio. Her genre is theatre music and storytelling and poor people are often the main characters in her songs. She makes music also for children.

Tuija needs funding to be able to cover all the costs for this new video. The money she
will get from YouTube will be donated for homeless people and organisation called Vailla Vakinaista Asuntoa ry.

So what is this all about? Northern Marginal festival is a culture attack on multiple fronts and packed with the boldest sounds of Finland, the Finnish forest and some pretty unique films and music documentaries. The festival program consists of three independent sections: mømø [mːːøˑmø] , Syndrome and In the Icelandic Woods.

mømø [mːːøˑmø]

The music section, mømø, treats the Icelandic crowd to a diverse lineup of the reigning Finnish music genre’s together with local amazing talents in downtown Reykjavík where the bands will take the stage at clubs, in a church and by the pool. The lineup includes folk metal band Finntroll, black metal band Black Crucifixion, classically trained organist Pétur Sakari, multi talented musicians and DJ’s Jimi Tenor and Jori Hulkkonen and the punk explosion Räjäyttäjät! Miss this and you’ll be crying about it later!

Syndrome – Moving pictures with a different perspective

The films of Syndrome presents the marginal phenomenons of the Finnish music scene through an assorted selection of narratives from documentary to surrealistic vision.
The film program includes the works of such independent directors as Jimi Tenor & Jusu Lounela, CHRZU, Pete Eurooppa, Sami Kettunen and Jani Volanen. Especially chosen for the festival are also the acclaimed films Kovasikajuttu/Punk Syndrome (Kärkkäinen & Passi 2008) and Punk – tauti joka ei tapa/Punksters and Youngsters (Aaltonen 2008).

In the Icelandic Woods brings the forest to a land with no trees!

In the Icelandic Woods exhibition invites you to experience in multiple ways and on a multi sensory level what the forest an the well being of, from and by the forest means for the Finnish people.

The exhibition presents the forest in shapes of design, music, art, travel, leisure, well being, technical heritage and also seen through the eyes of those inspired by the forest: Jean Sibelius, Pekka Halonen and Akseli Gallen-Kallela among others.

Huolimatta isoista aiheista, levyä hallitsee kaiken takana positiivinen pohjavire ja kuten levyn päättävässä Viimeisessä laulussa omaa kuolemaansa pohtiva hahmo toteaakin; “on juhlat päättyneet vaan jatkan kohti seuraavaa”.
