Treasure of Nepal

For the last 18 months I’ve been photographing the life and work of Nepalese crafts men and women in Kathmandu.

My journey took me all over the Kathmandu valley, on a bicycle, in taxis and by motor scooter, meeting crafts men and women in a wide variety of disciplines. Their skills are deeply ingrained in the fabric of Nepal’s cultural traditions going back centuries. They follow in the footsteps of their ancestors; creating stunning works of art with tools they make themselves.

It would take many volumes to cover all of the disciplines that the Kathmandu valley has to offer and so in this book I have made a personal selection of the crafts and the makers that inspired me most.

In these richly illustrated pages you will find lost wax casting of copper, gilding, statue face painting, repoussé, wood carving, stone carving, drum making, thanka painting, Tibetan jewellery, paper making, silk thanka, textiles and shell carving.

Change is happening in Nepal. The children of these crafts men and women are going into higher education. They are leaving the family tradition behind and so in years to come many of these crafts might die out.

Treasure of Nepal is a stunning book printed on the highest quality art book paper – Finnish Language Version and English Language Version – a photographic document at a unique period in Nepal’s history that illustrates the life and work of this gifted group of artisans – with stories that tell of my own experiences living among them in recent years.

Signmark – Empower. Together. Always.

Signmark headed towards Nepal and Mount Everest with rock band AncarA to attempt a world record, Rockin’ High – World’s highest concert. Their target is to hike up to 5,5 kilometers and perform there the highest electric concert in the world. The concert is planned to be streamed live online and the live stream is accessible globally. The whole journey is also filmed for a documentary. During the project they also want to collect funds for a music school in Nepal.

When Signmark was at school, he never received proper music teaching. No music theory was taught – only some rhythmic exercises and mostly with poor sign language. For this reason good quality music teaching at the school in Nepal was selected as the target of the fundraising.

The aim is to hire two music teachers to the project. One will be a hearing Nepalese musician and the other a sign-languaged deaf person. The whole project will also be documented on film, starting from the beginning of the teaching and up until a joint music video with the students.

When the group for the project has been gathered, Signmark and Olli Hartonen will teach them methods of music teaching and inform on the process of the documentation. The aim is that after having participated in the project, the group involved would spread out to local schools for deaf children to further share their knowledge. This stage is documented also. The idea is that the students receive basic music teaching and get to enjoy the world of music first hand. At the end of the project all the participants come together for a music video experience!

Signmark: ”The extent of the project depends on how much we all together can collect funds and work for these children. Help me to realise this amazing project in Nepal!”

Moving Mountain School Bag

Moving Mountain School Bag is an initiative of Rewati Gurung – a local student of development studies and her project aims to provide school children from the age of 4 to 12 with a basic school bag, pencils, erasers, sharpeners, notebooks – called ‘copy’ in Nepal – a whistle for emergencies and a pair of sandals as children often come to school with nothing on their feet.
While the rest of Nepal and her International support partners and aid workers are concentrating on Food Relief, Shelter, Health and Safety, we felt that the parents of children who had lost everything would find it hard to justify the purchasing of school materials before their basic needs of food and shelter had been met.
We strongly believe that education is the building blocks of the future of Nepal, and that by providing school bags immediately after this catastrophe school children are reminded that their education is the best way to move mountains. Please visit our website at www.movingmountainschoolbag.org and see what we have achieved so far.
When you buy bags here, Moving Mountain School Bag rewards you by including your name on the Supporters page of our website. Rewati Gurung arranges the delivery of the donations and personally visits each school. These are situated in remote areas that are very difficult to get to and her team often have to walk the last few hours with porters to reach the villages.
Through this crowd funding platform Moving Mountain School Bag hopes to raise enough donations to provide thousands of these children with the basic tools for learning. We need your help to achieve our goal. Every Bag Helps!
