Air Guitar Statue to Oulu

The northern town of Oulu, Finland, has hosted the world’s topmost air guitar competition for two decades. Ever since the first Air Guitar World Championships, the purpose of the event has been to promote world peace. The creativity and ideology of the art form is now about to be immortalized in a statue that – obviously – is made of air.

The statue consists of pedestal, and the air guitar itself that lies upon it. This crowd funding project aims to give this fine piece of air the pedestal it deserves, the foundation of peace. The interactive statue project is created and produced by Oulu-based journalists Soile Suvanto and Marko Siekkinen. The statue is designed by Paavo Pietola.

Just as air guitar is an equal and accessible art form for everyone, the statue will act as an open stage for all who are willing to find their inner air guitarist. The piece of art will encourage people go creative and find their signature air guitar moves. Statue will be located at a picturesque spot by Oulujoki river. The inspiring environment invites to step on stage, shred away and capture the moments on camera. The opening ceremony is held during the Air Guitar World Championships in August 2015.

The goal of this crowd funding project is to cover the material and execution costs of the statue. The work has been started with the support of Finnish Cultural Foundation that granted 6500 euros to the project. We’re looking for backers to cover the material, casting and authorization costs – To help us to build the foundation of peace.

Air Guitar World Championships is an event of entertainment and showmanship with a flavor of rock parody. Since 1996, the contest has gone world wide with massive international press coverage, several official national championships as well as tons of devoted fans in social media. In addition to the live audience, the event reaches millions of contacts via international media coverage every year. The city of Oulu and the official Air Guitar World Championships organization are supporting the statue project.
